Universe Sandbox is a physics-based space simulation and sandbox for macOS that lets you create, modify, collide, and observe planets, stars, galaxies, and other astronomical systems using real-time gravity, climate, collision, and material simulations. The application uses Newtonian mechanics to model large-scale space systems and supports Apple silicon Macs.
Universe Sandbox is designed for users interested in astronomy, physics, planetary science, and creative space experimentation. You can build custom planetary systems, alter orbital and environmental conditions, model planetary climates, recreate historical astronomical events, and explore the effects of changing mass, materials, collisions, and other physical parameters.
Key Features N-Body Gravity Simulation: Simulate gravitational interactions between multiple celestial bodies using Newtonian mechanics at adjustable speeds. Planet and Star Collisions: Create large-scale collisions between planets and stars and observe the resulting physical effects, including molten surfaces and impact craters. Custom Solar Systems: Build planetary systems by adding stars, planets, moons, rings, comets, and black holes to custom configurations. Planetary Climate Simulation: Observe seasonal changes, sea ice, atmospheric conditions, and temperature effects by modifying planetary tilt, orbital position, and other parameters. Star Evolution and Supernovae: Increase stellar mass, collide stars, or trigger explosive events to observe supernova behavior. Planetary Terraforming: Build and alter planets using 12 materials, including water, oxygen, and carbon dioxide, while shaping oceans and mountains. Celestial Phenomena: Explore pulsars, stellar flares, volatile trails, light-warping black holes, and procedurally generated planets, stars, and galaxies. Historical Space Events: Explore simulations involving spacecraft such as Juno and New Horizons and recreate events such as total solar eclipses. Advanced Planetary Physics: Experiment with centrifugal force, orbital changes, atmospheric effects, material interactions, and other physical conditions to observe their consequences. Steam Workshop: Share simulations and explore creations from other users through Steam Workshop integration.
